This series is a permanent installation in the Lucy Curci Cancer Center on the Eisenhower Hospital Campus in Rancho Mirage. Using my various layering techniques and the mid-century breezeway block forms so prevalent in Greater Palm Springs, I created a series that balances color, shape, light, and shadow.
In the first set of color versions of the series, the playful shapes of the curved diamond-Esque pattern move and flow, bending around the solid figure of the breeze block form. The complex curves of the underlying pattern create contrast with the simple breezeway block contours.
The second set features stepped layered versions; the color adds a touch of whimsy to the large blocks, strengthening the profile. The repetitive strokes of color draw the eye, moving in and out, back and forth, up and down. The final quartet, a bold statement in solid, bright, vibrant colors.
complex simplicity in shadows
A dramatic shift occurs when the color is removed, and the movement is created by the shadows of the design. The playful diamond-Esque forms become formal, each step and curve an intentional stroke that directs the eye. The steps of the architectural block pieces have a new depth. Are we following them up or down, or is the movement just an illusion?
